My best friend and I met one another when we were eighteen. We married, had three lovely lovely chilblains and have been together for thirty six years all up. It's my beloved's birthday this week and in the total absence of any kind of wish list or hint, I asked him this morning flat out 'what would you like?'
He paused, handed me a mug of tea (I told you he was my best friend!) and after a lengthy lull said 'hmmmm. I think some....err...blue tooth headphones would be good.'
I smiled and nodded, while thinking in a panic 'what on earth are tooth-headphones and where the hell am I going to get blue ones?'
He looked at my pained expression, adding 'they sell them in Officeworks,' and then when my brow still hadn't cleared 'um... they're really not that expensive, honestly.'
I sipped my tea feeling incredibly thick. Where was a young person to consult when I needed one?
I took the plunge. 'OK you're gonna have to help me here. What are tooth-headphones used for?'
He stared at me. I felt very dim. Then he started to laugh. And so did I,though I wasn't sure why.
The tea got spilled, he rocked with mirth and couldn't speak for giggling.
And then I got it. The old penny dropped. 'Ohhhhhh...... Bluetooth headphones....!!'
He put down his mug and hugged me as we both roared with laughter, unable to stop.
'Don't worry' he gasped after a moment or two ' I promise I won't tell the kids...' Honestly - I felt so flipping old!
When my birthday rolls round in November, never mind headphones, I think I'll put hearing-aid on my wish list!'
